Travel tips

International Flights

Yangon has direct air links with Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei, Osaka, Chiang Mai, Dacca, Calcutta, Karachi, Bhutan, and Kun Ming. The Myanmar Airways International (8M), Thai Airways International (TG), Bangkok airways (PG), Silk Air (Ml), Malaysian Airline (MH), Mandarin Airlines (AE), Druk Air-Royal Bhutan Airline (KB), Biman (BG) and Indian Airlines (IC) all fly to Yangon.

Visa and Passport

All travellers to Myanmar are required to have a visa with current valid Passport. Myanmar visa can be applied at any Myanmar embassy or Consulate world-wide. Tourist visa is 28 days and this kind of visa is usually sufficient for most visitors . A "Visa on Arrival" is granted only with prior arrangement at least a minimum of 10 days ahead by Brilliant sun travel, but we recommend to obtain your Visa ahead of time.

Credit Cards

All travellers are recommended to carry sufficient amount of hard cash in US dollars for their stay in Myanmar. Due to United States government economic sanctions against Myanmar government, all the credit cards are NOT possible to be used in Myanmar.

Airport Tax

International departure tax is US$ 10, payable also in US$ currency or local FEC (Foreign Exchange Certificate). No departure tax is required for domestic flights.

Customs Formalities

All foreign currencies (above US D $2000) and valuables (jewelry, cameras, laptop computers, electronic equipment, etc.) must be declared at the airport upon arrival. Receipt of purchase for locally bought goods such as gems and jewelry is required upon departure. Export of antiques and archaeologically valuable items are strictly prohibited. Two bottles of liquor, two cartons of cigarettes, 100 Cigars, 1.5 lbs. of tobacco, 1 pint bottle of perfume or cologne are allowed as duty free.

Health Requirements

No vaccinations are presently required for a visit to Myanmar unless you are coming from an infected area. But it is recommended that you to be immunized against polio, typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis A and B and Japanese encephalitis. We advice you to contact your local health department.

Mobile Phones and Internet

Mobile phones could not operate currently in Myanmar because there is not yet GSM network. Mobile phones should be left at custom counter on arrival day and collect it on departure day. But IDD telephone, fax and e-mail services are available at Internet cafes in Yangon and at most of hotels and local businesses in Yangon and Mandalay . Myanmar country code for international phone call is 95. Country code is mm.

Time Difference

GMT+6 1/2 hours

Climate and Season

Myanmar has tropical climate with three seasons. The ideal period to visit Myanmar is from October to February during the cool season. The temperature vary from 25' C to 32' C. But in the hilly region it can be cooler from 10' to 20' C. The hot season starts at month of March and end at month of May with average temperature from 30' C ~ 37' C . From June to Mid October is the wet season.

Language

The official language is Myanmar (Burmese) and English is widely used.

Clothing

Generally light cotton clothing is appropriate for visiting Myanmar. But sweater or light jackets are recommended when visiting mountain areas. Religious areas such as pagodas, temples and monasteries are always visited with bare feet. Modest and decent dress is required. We recommend our guests easily removable footwear for their stay in Myanmar. Sun glasses, sun block cream, hats will be very useful and an umbrella or raincoat for the monsoon months (June - October).

Domestic Airlines

Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways and Air Bagan are operated throughout Myanmar. There is a 20 Kilo limit for baggage per person and excess baggage fees may be charged.

Food

Myanmar and Chinese restaurants can be found everywhere. European cuisine is available in international standard hotels. Drink only bottled water.

Office Hours

Offices are usually open from Monday to Friday from 09:30 until 16:30.
Banks open only at 10:00 till 14:00, Monday to Friday.

Electricity

The voltage is 220-230 Volts AC. Travellers are advised to carry required protection for their electrical items because for power cuts but major hotels offer 24 hour power with their own generators if needed.

Gratuities and Tipping

Myanmar people are naturally pleased to help their visitors but don't expect anything in return. But if your guide or any other person is helpful a generous gesture is highly appreciated.

Restricted Areas

Access for travelling in some remote or border areas of Myanmar is still restricted.
